Sex Offender Therapy can Reduce the Risk of Future Offenses

Deborah O. Day, Psy.D - Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Programs for sex offender therapy are offered across the country, helping patients make changes and live safer, healthier lives. There is recent evidence that suggests treatment can definitely reduce the risk of future offenses. Sex offender therapy-based interventions for young people, too, can reduce or even eliminate further offenses. A person who has been charged with a sex offense should pursue therapy for many reasons. The most important reason to pursue Orlando sex offender therapy is because it has the ability to remove the burden of secrecy and shame. A qualified sex offender therapist will provide their patient with a safe environment to express their emotions. A sex offender therapist can also help the patient break their cycle of abuse, stop their behavior, and provide support for turning their life around. Additionally, peers within the treatment group can provide a solid foundation of mutual support. Therapy provides a level of emotional protection for a sex offender, so that they can begin to recover from their past offenses.

The Importance of Sex Offender Therapy

Deborah O. Day, Psy.D - Tuesday, August 19, 2014

A sex offender is a child or adult who has committed a sex crime. While the nature and categorization of sex crimes can differ by location, a sex offender does not have to have been involved in actual molestation. Therapy for sex offenders is quite different than other types of therapies; it is a comprehensive process with a focus on strategy acquisition that emphasizes preventative measures, personal accountability, and accepting responsibility for harm that occurred. Although sex offenders may never be considered completely cured, Orlando sex offender therapy can greatly reduce the risk of continued offenses.  It will not offer patients any type of amnesty or pardon for the acts they have committed, and it is not meant as a punishment or form of humiliation. The purpose of sex offender therapy is to help patients develop their personal strengths, manage their risks, and make a better life for themselves. The Orlando therapists who perform sex offender therapy usually specialize in adults and young people with sexual behavioral problems. This treatment is extremely effective for most patients. It is possible for a person to change their behavior through specialized methods of treatment. Without such treatment, the behavior will most likely continue indefinitely, as patterns of abuse are very hard to break without the aid of an experienced professional.
